Common questions

How do I work out my hourly rate when self-employed?

Add your target income to your yearly business costs, then divide by the hours you can actually bill once holidays, sick days and admin time are taken off.

Why is my rate higher than an employed wage?

You pay your own costs, holidays, sick days and pension, and not every working hour is paid. Your rate has to cover all of that.

How do I get a day rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the billable hours in a typical working day. The calculator does this for you.

Is the income figure before or after tax?

Enter what you want to earn before tax and National Insurance. The calculator does not work out your tax, so speak to an accountant if you want a take-home figure. The cost figures are rough UK starting points, not quotes, so replace them with your own.

Do I need an account?

No. The tool is free and works without signing up. Without an account, anything you save stays in this browser on this device only. With a free OneLuton account, your saved details and document history sync to your account, so you can pick them up on any device.
