Common questions
How do I add 20% VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by 1.2. For example, £100 plus 20% VAT is £120, of which £20 is VAT.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by 1.2 for the 20% rate. For example, £120 including VAT is £100 before VAT, so the VAT is £20. Dividing by 1.2 is correct; taking 20% off is not.
Which VAT rate should I use?
Most goods and services use the 20% standard rate. Some things, such as domestic fuel and certain energy-saving installations, use the 5% reduced rate, and others, like most food and children's clothes, are zero-rated. Rates and rules change, so check GOV.UK if you are unsure which applies to a job.
Why can't I just take 20% off the total?
Because the 20% was added to the net price, not the total. On a £120 bill, the VAT is £20 (one sixth), not £24. Switch to "Remove VAT" and the calculator works it out properly.
